On the Air: Campus Earth Learners Find Their Voice
Our Wednesday Adventure took us behind the scenes at 101.7 K-Lite, where our learners experienced how radio broadcasting works from the inside out. On Wednesday, January 28th, the kids stepped into the studio filled with microphones, soundboards, headphones, and the unmistakable glow of the “on air” sign—discovering a place where voices are shaped, recorded, and shared far beyond the room.
Our host, Catherine Remak, welcomed the group and walked them through the flow of a professional radio show. With prompts and short scripts provided, each child took a turn at the microphone—recording weather segments, introducing songs, and sharing brief on-air-style moments. Each student had the opportunity to record their script twice, learning how smiling changes the sound of their voice, how slowing down improves pacing, and how expression and tone bring words to life.
Engineer Rich Williams added another layer of learning by explaining how sound waves work, how microphones capture vibration, and how recorded audio travels from the studio to listeners’ radios. The kids watched closely as levels were adjusted and thoughtful questions were answered, making the science of sound and broadcasting feel tangible and real.
The following Tuesday, February 3rd, those recorded segments were played during the 9:00–10:00 AM hour of the Morning Show, bringing our learners’ voices to the airwaves! What stood out most throughout the experience was the encouragement the kids showed one another—listening attentively, celebrating each turn, and stepping forward with growing confidence. We invite you to listen to the clips below and enjoy hearing our Campus Earth learners’ voices as they made their way from the studio to the airwaves. 🎙️✨
